Replacement Fuel Tanks vs. Auxiliary Fuel Tanks

A main replacement fuel tank takes the place of the original tank and typically retains the factory fill location and fuel gauge. An auxiliary fuel tank adds a second fuel supply and transfers fuel into the main tank. Both designs increase fuel capacity, but the right option depends on the space and layout available beneath the vehicle.

For the 4th Gen Tacoma, Long Range America chose a main replacement design. The new tank fits in place of the factory unit and fills through the original fuel door, so there is no separate filler, transfer pump, or external fuel container to manage.

New 4th Gen Tacoma 33-Gallon Fuel Tank

The factory 4th Gen Tacoma fuel tank holds 18 gallons, or approximately 68 litres. The new Long Range America TT4R replacement fuel tank increases capacity to 33 gallons, or approximately 125 litres.

That is an additional 15 gallons, or roughly 57 litres, representing an 83 per cent increase in fuel capacity. Actual driving range will still depend on fuel economy, load, tires, terrain, weather, and towing conditions, but the added capacity can make a major difference between fuel stops.

The tank is handmade from durable 2mm aluminized steel and designed for the conditions commonly faced by trucks driven through gravel, mud, snow, road salt, and off-road terrain.

The factory fuel-level gauge will remain accurate after installation. However, the Tacoma’s distance-to-empty calculation will not account for the increased fuel capacity, so drivers should continue to monitor the fuel gauge and refuel when the low-fuel warning appears.

Installation and Weight Considerations

The Long Range America TT4R is designed to be DIY-friendly for an experienced installer and uses the Tacoma’s existing tank strap locations. No exhaust changes or spare-tire relocation are required, which helps keep the installation relatively straightforward for a tank of this size.

It is still important to account for the added weight. A larger tank does not increase the truck’s payload capacity. Both the tank and any additional fuel carried count toward the available payload, so this should be considered alongside passengers, cargo, accessories, and trailer tongue weight.

Long Range America fuel tanks are not intended to be topped off after the fuel nozzle shuts off. Topping off the tank will void the tank warranty.
