Let's Talk About Air

Let’s Talk About Air

Air is awesome, especially when you are off-road and able to adjust your tire pressures for the terrain ahead.

Airing down your tires can dramatically improve ride comfort, traction, and control on rough roads, rocky trails, snow, sand, and mud. But letting the air out is only half the battle. Eventually the trail ends, and you need to get those tires back up to safe road pressures before heading home (unless you have a trailer queen, in which case I envy you).

That is where compressors and air accessories come in.

At KRAVE Automotive, compressors are one of those upgrades we recommend to almost everyone getting into overlanding or off-road travel. Once you own one, you quickly realize how useful they really are.

Portable vs Mounted Compressors

Compressors generally fall into two categories, portable and mounted systems.

Portable compressors are great because they can move between vehicles and easily be stored when not in use. They are a perfect option for people who want flexibility or are just getting into the off-road world.

One brand we have been really impressed with is MORRFlate.

Not only do they offer awesome portable compressors, but their hose kits allow you to air up or air down two or even all four tires at once. Once you use a 4-tire setup, it is very hard to go back to doing one tire at a time.

Their systems make airing up faster, easier, and far less painful after a long day on the trail.

One thing we really like about the MORRFlate ecosystem is that there are a couple different ways to build a setup depending on how automated you want the process to be.

You can go with one of the MORRFlate Pro Compressors, which allows you to preset your target tire pressure directly on the compressor itself. Hook it up, hit start, and the compressor will automatically stop once the tires reach your desired PSI.

The other option is pairing one of MORRFlate’s standard compressors with their AirHub system and hose kits. The AirHub acts as the control centre for the setup and gives you the ability to both inflate and deflate your tires to a preset pressure.

That means instead of constantly checking pressures with a gauge, the system can automatically stop at your target PSI whether you are airing up after the trail or airing down before heading out.

It is one of those things that sounds unnecessary until you use it once. Then you never want to go back.

Mounted compressors are exactly what they sound like, permanently installed systems mounted somewhere on the vehicle, commonly under the hood, under seats, or inside drawer systems.

For mounted setups, we commonly install ARB Air Compressors, specifically the ARB Single and ARB Twin compressors

The ARB Single is compact, reliable, and perfect for many weekend warriors, while the ARB Twin is ideal for larger tires, faster inflation times, and more demanding builds. If you are regularly airing up 35s or 37s, the twin compressor is an absolute game changer.

Why Airing Down Matters

Lower tire pressures help:

  • Improve traction
  • Smooth out rough roads
  • Increase ride comfort
  • Reduce harsh impacts on the vehicle

It is one of the easiest and most effective things you can do to improve vehicle performance off-road.

You just need a reliable way to get that air back afterward.

Final Thoughts

Whether you go with a portable MORRFlate setup or a mounted ARB Air Compressor system, onboard air is one of the most useful upgrades you can add to an off-road vehicle.

At KRAVE Automotive, we use these systems because they genuinely make trail travel easier, faster, and more enjoyable.
