Portal Runner

What starts as a capable Toyota 4Runner quickly becomes something entirely different when you add portal axles.

This build began as a well-equipped adventure rig designed for long-distance travel and backcountry exploration. During the first stage of the build, we outfitted the 5th Gen 4Runner with a 3-inch ELKA Suspension DSC lift and 35-inch Yokohama Geolandar M/T G003 tires, dramatically improving ride quality, capability, and trail performance.

To support extended trips, the vehicle received a custom storage system from Fhart Systems, complete with a full drawer system and fridge slide, creating a practical and organized platform for life on the road. Protection and recovery capability were enhanced with C4 Fabrication front and rear bumpers, helping prepare the truck for whatever adventure lay ahead.

For most people, that would be more than enough.

But this build was just getting started.

The second stage took things to an entirely different level with the addition of a complete 74Weld Portal Conversion System. Designed to increase ground clearance, improve driveline geometry, and handle extreme off-road abuse, the 74Weld portals transformed the 4Runner into one of the most capable vehicles to roll through the KRAVE shop.

To complement the portal conversion, the truck was upgraded to 37-inch Yokohama Geolandar M/T G003 tires mounted on Method Race Wheels 709 wheels, creating an aggressive stance while maintaining the reliability needed for long-distance adventures and technical trail use.

Supporting modifications included JD Fabrication lower arm pivot kits, JD Fabrication 934 RCV axle shafts, Apex Chassis heavy-duty tie rods, Dirt King lower control arms, rear E-Locker, Powerbrake brake adapters, and numerous suspension and driveline modifications required to properly integrate the portal system.

Portal builds are never simple. Every component needs to work together, and every detail matters. The result is a 4Runner that feels equally at home crawling through technical terrain, exploring remote backcountry routes, or turning heads wherever it goes.

With ELKA Suspension, 74Weld portals, Yokohama tires, Method Race Wheels, C4 Fabrication armour, and a custom Fhart Systems storage solution, this build represents what happens when capability comes first and compromises are left behind.

We want to thank the owner for trusting KRAVE Automotive through both stages of this build. Watching this project evolve from a capable overland rig into a fully portal-equipped trail machine has been an incredible experience, and we're proud to have been part of the journey.

Yeeew!!
